Confessions
What is it?
Confession in the Anglo‑Catholic tradition — often called The Reconciliation of a Penitent — is a sacramental rite in which a person comes before God, in the presence of a priest, to confess sins committed after baptism and to receive God’s forgiveness, mercy, and grace. It restores our relationship with God and with the Church, healing what has been strained or broken by sin.
It involves prayerful preparation, honest self‑examination, speaking sins aloud, receiving spiritual counsel and a penance, and finally hearing the words of absolution — God’s assurance of forgiveness.
Confession is hard precisely because it is honest. It asks us to examine our lives, admit failure, and trust another with our vulnerability. But because it is hard, it is also transformative. What begins with courage ends with peace. Confession isn’t simply a duty — it is a gift: God meeting us where we are, lifting the weight we cannot carry alone, and sending us out renewed.
In many parishes, including St Alban’s, confession is offered privately by appointment or at set times in the liturgical year.
