Next Sunday we look forward to Laetare Sunday, also known as Mothering Sunday. Do remember to invite family members—especially mothers—as we give thanks for our own mothers, living and departed, and for the Church, our mother in faith. This weekend Fr Joshua, Jenny and Riah are taking some of our children to the Children’s Pilgrimage. Please keep them in your prayers and we hope it will be a blessed and joyful time for them! This week we will also lay to rest our dear sister Audrey Reid, whose funeral will take place on Thursday. After 100 years of life she witnessed and contributed so much to the life of our church, and we give thanks to God for her. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that he will give living water that becomes a spring of eternal life. In Lent we remember our baptism, when that living water was first given to us, sustaining us through every season of life. May all that occurs this week be a spring of God’s grace through our joyful baptism. Back To ‘News’ Download Sunday Booklet Dear brothers and sisters, As we continue through Lent, we begin to enter some of the more challenging moments of this holy season. The good intentions with which we began may now be tested. We may feel tempted to return to the foods we have chosen to fast from, to fill our time with distractions rather than prayer, or even to justify holding back the generosity we hoped to give to the poor and to the Church. Yet this struggle is part of the Lenten journey. In these weeks the Church gives us the Gospel of the Transfiguration. The disciples are given a glimpse of Christ’s glory on the mountain before they must walk with Him towards Jerusalem, the Cross, and Good Friday. The Transfiguration reminds us that our Lenten practices are not simply about discipline, but about transformation. With Christ’s help and grace, our prayer, fasting, and generosity help shape us more and more into His likeness as we journey towards the Cross and the hope of Easter. Thank you to all who have been attending our Lent course — it has been a real encouragement to see you there. And please don’t worry if you have missed a session; it is very easy to pick up and join us at any point. As we enter these forty days of penitence and preparation, I pray that this holy season may draw each of us more deeply into the disciplines of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving — or, as we might also say, charity. These practices are not simply traditions of the Church; they are invitations to renewed life in Christ. Here at St Alban’s Church, charity is not an abstract idea — it is at the very heart of our mission and ministry. Throughout the week, our church building is alive with service and welcome: +Toddler Tuesday, supporting families and young children+Our Foodbank, meeting urgent local need+The Community Hub, offering friendship and practical help+FoodCycle, providing warm meals and companionship All of these ministries are growing — thanks be to God. And so too is our Sunday congregation. It is a joy to see new faces and a deepening sense of community week by week. However, alongside this growth come increasing costs. Our January gas bill for the church was £2,023.53, and for the hall £1,310.53. Utility bills continue to rise. Yet while costs are increasing, giving has not grown in monetary terms — nor have we seen an increase in the number of people able to give their time. In our Lent course this year, we will be reflecting more deeply on generosity — not as pressure, but as discipleship. We are immensely grateful for the generous giving we already receive from the congregation. Your faithfulness sustains our worship, our witness, and our outreach. But Lent invites each of us to ask prayerfully: Is it time to increase your giving?Do you give regularly to your church?Might even a small increase make a difference? As we journey through these forty days, may our fasting create space for God, may our prayer deepen our trust, and may our almsgiving reflect the abundant grace we ourselves have received. Download Sunday Booklet Dear friends at St Alban’s, Lent begins next week on Ash Wednesday, when we will gather for Mass and the imposition of ashes at 10am and 7pm (sung). This is a very important occasion for each of us as Christians, it marks the beginning of a holy season of repentance, prayer, fasting, and renewal. I encourage you to take this season of Lent seriously and to approach it with prayerful intention. We are also looking forward to preparing for Lent together with an enormous feast after the parish Mass. Do bring food with you so that we can mark Shrove Tuesday with a big and joyful celebration before the fast begins. Below is a link to a booklet that will be given out in church. It is intended as your guide to keeping a holy Lent at St Alban’s and in your own life. Do take time to look through it and begin preparing now—today—for the journey ahead. This Sunday – Racial Justice Sunday – 8 February 2026
Download Sunday Booklet Dear brothers and sisters of St Alban’s, This Sunday we celebrate the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and we also observe Racial Justice Sunday. This is an important moment for us to reflect on our calling to be a Church that truly reflects the love, dignity, and equality of all God’s people. The Diocese of Southwark’s Anti-Racist Charter reminds us that the Church is called to be a place where every person is valued and welcomed. It challenges us to recognise injustice, confront prejudice, and work actively to build communities where diversity is celebrated as a gift from God. As Christians, we are called not only to reject racism, but to be intentional in creating spaces of belonging, understanding, and reconciliation. This past Thursday, members of the PCC took part in unconscious bias training. For me, this highlighted a very important part of our church’s mission: celebrating our diversity, honouring our differences, and being truly inclusive. Our parish should be a place where everyone is welcomed, where each person knows they have a home and a place in the life of the Church. I am delighted that Fr Jothi will celebrate and preach at the Parish Mass this weekend. I hope and pray that we will continue to rejoice in the richness of our diversity, include everyone, and grow together in holiness and in number. This Sunday – Candlemas – The Presentation Of The Lord In The Temple – 1 February 2026
Download Sunday Booklet Dear friends at St Alban’s, This Sunday we celebrate the wonderful Feast of Candlemas: the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. I have to confess that it is one of my favourite feasts — not only because it marks the anniversary of my baptism, but also because I have a great love of fire… especially candles! (Some might even say I have pyromaniac tendencies — though only in the safest and most reverent way.) At Candlemas we hear of Simeon, who recognises Jesus as “a light for revelation to the nations.” Throughout our worship this Sunday we will be reminded that Christ’s light shines in the darkness, and that the darkness can never overcome it. That theme of light feels especially close to home this week. Yesterday, Thursday 29 January, we welcomed the Archdeacon and representatives from the Diocese of Southwark for our parish conversation — what used to be known as the Bishop’s Visitation. One of the strongest messages to emerge from our conversation was just how deeply we see St Alban’s as a beacon of light in our parish. That light shines through our community outreach, through the warmth of our welcome, and through our commitment to ensuring that everyone has a ministry in the life of the church — that everyone truly belongs. This is something to celebrate and to give thanks for. Thank you to all who continue to make St Alban’s a light for all nations. May this Sunday’s worship draw us ever closer to the light of Christ, which burns so wonderfully and generously for each one of us. Download Sunday Booklet Dear Friends at St Alban’s, This past week marked a very special milestone for us: the one-year anniversary of Toddler Tuesday. What a joy it has been to see this initiative grow and flourish within our church community. I am deeply thankful to all who have made it possible, especially to Tammy and her wonderful team of helpers, whose faithfulness and hard work have been such a blessing. Sometimes the small acts of service—moving chairs, setting up, tidying away—can seem pointless or even tedious. Yet even these simple, unseen tasks are part of God’s work among us. They, too, help prepare the ground for the coming of the Kingdom of God in this place. Please continue to pray for all who attend Toddler Tuesday, and for their children, that they may catch a glimpse of God’s love, kindness, and welcome through us. It has been a real joy for me to be back in the swing of things after being unwell. Thank you for your prayers and kindness during that period. I should let you know that I won’t be with you this weekend, as I have the pleasure of attending Fr David D’Silva’s licensing as priest at the Church of St Silas in Blackburn. In due course, he will also be made a Canon of Blackburn Cathedral. We hold David and his family in our prayers as he prepares for this new season of ministry. We wish them every blessing. Download Sunday Booklet Dear Friends at St Alban’s, It was a great joy to return to Sunday Mass last weekend and to see so many familiar, friendly faces after being away. I am very grateful for the warmth of your welcome and the sense of our parish gathered once again around the altar. It seems that the winter virus finally caught up with me and my family. Sadly we have been ill for much of this past week. Thankfully, things are looking much better now and I am hopeful that we will be well and truly back on our feet for this weekend. As the Church, we return once again to Ordinary Time, that liturgical space between the great seasons of Christmas and Lent. It is a time that reminds us that God is present not only in the high feasts but also in the ordinary rhythms of our daily lives. We look forward to celebrating Candlemas on Sunday 1st February. We also begin to think about how we might make a good Lent from Ash Wednesday on 18th February. Yes, I know — I’ve already said the “L” word! But, the better, more faithfully we keep Lent, the more wonderful and joy-filled our celebration of Easter will be. This Sunday we will hear the words from John’s Gospel, “Behold the Lamb of God.” Familiar words from the Mass. As we hear them, we look up to behold the presence of Christ in the Eucharist — the Body of Christ which feeds us now, in Ordinary Time, in Lent, and in all our days to come.
