Dear friends at St Alban’s,

This Sunday we celebrate the wonderful Feast of Candlemas: the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. I have to confess that it is one of my favourite feasts — not only because it marks the anniversary of my baptism, but also because I have a great love of fire… especially candles! (Some might even say I have pyromaniac tendencies — though only in the safest and most reverent way.)

At Candlemas we hear of Simeon, who recognises Jesus as “a light for revelation to the nations.” Throughout our worship this Sunday we will be reminded that Christ’s light shines in the darkness, and that the darkness can never overcome it.

That theme of light feels especially close to home this week. Yesterday, Thursday 29 January, we welcomed the Archdeacon and representatives from the Diocese of Southwark for our parish conversation — what used to be known as the Bishop’s Visitation. One of the strongest messages to emerge from our conversation was just how deeply we see St Alban’s as a beacon of light in our parish.

That light shines through our community outreach, through the warmth of our welcome, and through our commitment to ensuring that everyone has a ministry in the life of the church — that everyone truly belongs. This is something to celebrate and to give thanks for.

Thank you to all who continue to make St Alban’s a light for all nations. May this Sunday’s worship draw us ever closer to the light of Christ, which burns so wonderfully and generously for each one of us.

God bless,
Fr Sean
